6. The Sigh Of Love by Nene Yamaguchi
Let me get “the bad” out of the way here – a lot of lines are drawn sticky and webby, which is gross. Oh the girl looks 13, which is maybe “illegal”?! (I will still publish this post) I think this comic is intended for young teenagers, anyway. I dunno, maybe she’s a very flat-chested 18 because I haven’t read the story. But but, I wanna say…
I think this one is my favorite! The negative space is tremendous. That second spread is great, right? I love the way, at first glance, you almost can’t tell what’s going on. You really have to “look” and “read” the panels. But they’re clear. The movement in the last two panels is very graceful – she lifts her shoulders and drops her head. (or the camera just drops, but the effect is the same). I think this artist is pretty good. I don’t feel (as I do with some) that his cropping is concealing his or her weaknesses. Am I being too generous?
